You may not know this, but there are many job interview questions out there that seem okay for an interview, but they actually aren’t. Even though some aren’t obviously inappropriate, they’re not all easy to identify.

Here are some of the types of illegal job interview questions you need to look out for during your next interview.

About your family life:

  • Are you married?
  • Do you have any kids?
  • Are you pregnant?

About race:

  • What’s your nationality?
  • What race are you?
About religion:
  • What church do you attend?
  • What is your religion?
  • Are you religious?
About your living situation:
  • Do you own a home?
  • Do you rent?
  • Do you have an apartment?
  • Do you have anybody living with you?
  • Do you live with your parents?
About your gender:
  • Are you male or female?
About your age:
  • How old are you?
  • What’s your birth year?
  • When’s your birthday?
  • What year did you graduate from high school?
  • What year did you graduate from college?

These questions are illegal because they have nothing to do with the job you’re interviewing for. Also, and more importantly, there are laws in place which restrict interviewers asking questions that can be discriminatory. Some interviewers might try to slip these questions in on purpose, but most of the time it’s on accident and can be chalked up to inexperience.
